Rural fencing in Robinvale and the Euston side of the river

Robinvale has the highest share of grape growing of any place on this site, and Euston stands across the river in New South Wales. The two towns sit under different boundary-fence Acts, and this page keeps them apart.

Fencing in Robinvale: grape and nut country on the Murray

Fencing in Robinvale starts with a fact about the town: grape growing employs 17.1 per cent of its working residents, 241 people, at the 2021 Census. That is the highest horticulture share of any place on this site. Robinvale is on the Victorian side of the Murray, so Victorian boundary-fence law applies to a fence there. Your enquiry is passed to a local contractor, who quotes and does the work. We refer; we do not build.

According to a secondary source, Victorian Places, Robinvale lies on the Murray about midway between Swan Hill and Mildura, across the river from Euston in New South Wales. That is why this page has two halves. Robinvale's fences fall on the Victorian side of the Murray. Euston's fall on the New South Wales side. We never blend the two.

Robinvale's median age of 36 is the youngest among the places on this site. Euston is a much smaller place, and grape growing is still one of its top industries. These are job shares, so they show what residents do for work, not how much land is planted or which blocks are fenced.

Horticulture boundaries around Robinvale

Where grape growing is the largest industry, boundary and perimeter fences are likely to meet working blocks, gates and tracks. The vineyard and orchard boundary page covers those points, including the channel and river edges and the question of netting at a boundary, which is something to ask a contractor. Trellis is a separate skill and not part of this service.

A second source gives a wider picture, but only for the council area. A secondary economic profile, Economy.id for Swan Hill, shows grapes at 26.4 per cent of agricultural output in Swan Hill Rural City, cereal crops at 18.3 per cent and nuts at 14.2 per cent. Those shares are council-wide and are not Robinvale's alone. We publish them as context, not as a Robinvale figure.

Which council and which Act on the Victorian side

A secondary source places Robinvale in Swan Hill Rural City. We did not confirm that with a council page, so confirm the council for your block with the council itself. The Swan Hill Rural City boundary fencing page makes three points that are useful on the Victorian side of the Murray. The Fences Act "may not apply where the land adjoins Crown land, roads or laneways, or other authorities' land, such as Goulburn Murray Water or VicTrack". Councils cannot help with fencing disputes between neighbours. And a dividing fence "may sit off the common boundary line, for example where there is a waterway", which is council guidance, not a legal rule.

The Justice Victoria page says the neighbour has 30 days to respond to a Fencing Notice, that costs are shared equally in the normal case, and that for rural properties "a sufficient dividing fence might be a wire and post fence" (Justice Victoria). The Victorian boundary fence page sets out the steps and the Crown land carve-outs.

Robinvale and Euston face each other across the Murray, and a fence in each town sits under a different Act.

Euston, on the New South Wales side of the river

Euston's fences are on the New South Wales side of the Murray, where the Dividing Fences Act 1991 applies. On that side, NCAT says the notice must be served at least one month before you apply (NCAT). We did not fetch a council page for Euston and do not name its council, so ask the regulator or the council for the current contact. The New South Wales boundary fence page sets out that side, and the Buronga, Gol Gol, Dareton and Wentworth page covers the rest of the Sunraysia shore on that side.

No source we found says what either state's boundary-fence law does for a fence along the river, or between a Victorian owner and a New South Wales owner. A dividing fence is between neighbours' lands on the same side, and the Act that applies is the one for the state where the fence is. If your boundary is the river itself, or your neighbour is across it, ask the regulator or a solicitor. The Murray and Crown land page covers permits near the river for each side.

Weather and quotes

The climate record we fetched is for Mildura Airport, not Robinvale, so we give no Robinvale temperature or rainfall figures and make no claim about how the weather changes a fence. Ask the contractor how heat, fire restrictions and harvest affect access to the block. Before you sign, ask which licence or registration they hold for the side of the Murray where the fence stands, and read the licensing page. A cross-border contractor is a question for the regulator, not something this page can settle. When you are ready, send your details.

What this page cannot tell you

It cannot confirm which council covers Robinvale, because that comes from a secondary source, and it cannot name Euston's council. It cannot give vineyard counts, crop areas or climate figures for either town. It cannot say what either state's boundary-fence law does for a fence along the river or between a Victorian and a New South Wales owner, because no source we found says. Ask the regulator or a solicitor, and ask each contractor which licence or registration they hold.

Check the current rules before you rely on this

This page describes fencing at Robinvale on the Victorian side of the Murray and at Euston on the New South Wales side, with the census and council sources we could verify for each. It describes the rules in general terms as they stood in November 2026. Standards, forms, thresholds and fines change.

The authoritative sources are ABS 2021 Census QuickStats: Robinvale (suburb), ABS 2021 Census QuickStats: Euston (urban centre or locality), Swan Hill Rural City Council, boundary fencing, Justice Victoria, fences: your rights and obligations and Dividing Fences Act 1991 (NSW), in-force version dated 7 December 2024. Where anything here differs from those sources, they are right and we are not.

We are not fencing contractors, builders, regulators or lawyers. On the Victorian side of the Murray, ask Justice Victoria, the Dispute Settlement Centre Victoria and Legal Aid Victoria. On the New South Wales side, ask Legal Aid NSW and NCAT. For the contractor, ask which licence or registration they hold and check it with the regulator for the side where the fence stands.

Questions

Common questions

How important is grape growing in Robinvale?

At the 2021 Census, grape growing was the largest industry in Robinvale at 17.1 per cent of jobs, 241 people, the highest horticulture share of any place on this site. Agriculture and fishing support came next at 6.8 per cent, then other fruit and nut growing at 6.1 per cent.

Which council covers Robinvale?

A secondary source places Robinvale in Swan Hill Rural City, but we did not confirm that with a council page. Confirm the council for your block with the council itself, and ask it about permits. Swan Hill's boundary fencing page is the one we used for Victorian guidance.

Does the Victorian boundary fence Act always apply next to water authority land?

Not always. Swan Hill council says the Act may not apply where land adjoins Crown land, roads or laneways, or other authorities' land such as Goulburn Murray Water or VicTrack. If your boundary touches such land, ask the land manager before you plan a shared fence.

Is a fence in Euston under the same law as Robinvale?

No. Robinvale is on the Victorian side of the Murray and Euston is on the New South Wales side, and each side has its own Act with its own waiting period after a notice. Use the Victorian page for Robinvale and the New South Wales page for Euston.

What if my neighbour is across the Murray?

No source we found says what either state's boundary-fence law does for a fence along the river or between a Victorian owner and a New South Wales owner. Ask the regulator or a solicitor before you rely on a notice. A dividing fence is between neighbours' lands on the same side.

Can I use Mildura weather figures for Robinvale?

Not safely. The climate record we fetched is Mildura Airport's, and Robinvale is a different place on the river. We give no Robinvale temperature or rainfall figures. Ask the contractor how heat, fire restrictions and harvest affect access to your block.

Does a wire and post fence count as a sufficient rural fence in Robinvale?

On the Victorian side of the Murray, Justice Victoria says the law doesn't set a height or material, and that for rural properties a sufficient dividing fence might be a wire and post fence. It is an example, not a promise for your boundary, so agree the fence with your neighbour in writing.

How long do I wait after a notice in Euston?

Euston is on the New South Wales side of the Murray, where NCAT says the notice must be served at least one month before you apply. Robinvale is on the other side and has its own period, set out on the Victorian boundary fence page. Use the New South Wales page for Euston, and Legal Aid NSW or NCAT for a dispute.

The town, which side of the Murray, the fence type, roughly how long it is and how it is reached. That is usually enough for a contractor to ask the right questions before a visit.
